Senior AI/ML Engineer

Join our client’s team and a newly formed R&D team that working on an established technology platform that supports health programs across multiple African countries.

About the project

The client is an international nonprofit organization focused on strengthening the health and resilience of girls across Africa. Client operates a technology-enabled ecosystem connecting community organizations, healthcare providers, and other local partners. The team will contribute to the further development and orchestration of the existing production platform, with the longer-term goal of making the technology more extensible and suitable for use beyond the current programs.

Your impact

As a Senior AI/ML Engineer, you will work within a high-ownership agile team to design, build, and operate production AI/ML solutions focused on risk and fraud prevention. You will combine strong software engineering and data foundations with hands-on experience in traditional machine learning, Generative AI, LLMs, RAG, and agentic systems.

What makes you a great fit

• 5+ years of professional experience as an ML Engineer, AI Engineer, Data Scientist, Software Engineer, or similar role, with a strong track record of shipping production software
• Strong proficiency in Python and experience writing clean, maintainable, production-quality code
• Strong SQL skills and hands-on experience working with large-scale structured data
• Proven experience building and serving LLM-based, GenAI, or agentic systems in production for real users, beyond prototypes or PoCs
• Hands-on experience designing and building RAG pipelines, including chunking strategies, retrieval design, and evaluation
• Experience with agentic AI workflows, including multi-step reasoning, memory, tool integration, and agent orchestration
• Solid foundation in traditional machine learning, with strong expertise in at least one area such as tabular ML, classification, regression, ranking, NLP, or deep learning
• Good understanding of production AI/ML systems, including evaluation, monitoring, latency, throughput, scalability, reliability, and cost optimisation
• Strong systems thinking and understanding of how distributed components interact, degrade, and fail
• Ability to work independently, move quickly through iterative feedback loops, and take ownership of business outcomes
• Excellent written and spoken English

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or equivalent agentic AI frameworks
• Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and multi-agent systems
• Experience deploying and operating LLM services using LiteLLM, vLLM, Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, or similar technologies
• Experience with GenAI observability, evaluation, and drift detection tools such as LangSmith, Evidently, or RAGAS
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS
• Experience with MLOps automation, containerisation, and CI/CD for ML systems
• Domain experience in Risk, Fraud, Credit, Insurance, Cybersecurity, or FinTech
• Experience mentoring engineers or contributing to the technical community through blogging, public speaking, or knowledge sharing

What you will do

• Design, build, deploy, and debug sophisticated agentic AI workflows, including multi-step reasoning, memory integration, tool usage, and multi-agent orchestration
• Architect and continuously improve RAG pipelines, optimising chunking strategies, retrieval quality, and end-to-end evaluation
• Deploy and operate LLM-based services in production, optimising runtime latency, throughput, reliability, and cloud costs
• Develop and maintain traditional machine learning models for risk, fraud, and behavioural pattern detection
• Build evaluation and monitoring mechanisms around AI/ML systems to understand performance and failure modes
• Write clean, idiomatic, and production-quality Python code that integrates with existing software and data engineering systems
• Query, manipulate, and process structured data at scale using SQL
• Contribute to the design and evolution of scalable, secure, and resilient AI/ML architectures
• Collaborate closely with engineers and other team members in an agile, international environment
• Participate actively in team rituals, technical discussions, and iterative solution design
• Create and maintain clear technical documentation and contribute to a culture of shared learning
• Take end-to-end ownership of technical solutions and continuously improve their performance in production
