Help shape the technology behind a mission-driven platform that improves access to healthcare for adolescent girls across Africa as a Java Team Lead.

About the project

Our client operates an established digital platform connecting young women with healthcare providers and local partners, making essential health services more accessible across multiple African countries.

The platform is built around Java and Scala microservices and supports the organization’s healthcare programs at scale. The client is now expanding its technology organization and building a new R&D team in Eastern Europe.

Your impact

You’ll join the new R&D team alongside a Senior Java Backend Engineer and AI/ML Engineer, working closely with the existing distributed engineering organization across Africa and Europe.

As the Team Lead, you’ll play a key role in building and developing the new engineering team while remaining closely involved in the technical evolution of the platform. You’ll combine people management, technical leadership, and backend engineering — helping engineers grow, coordinating the team’s work, and contributing to system design and development.

What makes you a great fit

8+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on Java/JVM technologies
3+ years of formal leadership experience managing backend engineering teams
Proven people-management experience, including performance reviews, regular 1:1s, feedback, and professional development
Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring
Solid experience designing and developing microservices-based systems
Production experience with AWS
Strong understanding of software engineering principles, system design, testing, security, and maintainability
Experience coordinating distributed engineering teams and collaborating across different locations
Ability to combine people leadership with technical decision-making and hands-on engineering involvement
Strong ownership mindset with a focus on building scalable, reliable, and high-quality systems
Excellent written and spoken English

Nice to have

Experience with Scala or mixed Java/Scala environments
Experience with Salesforce CRM or Salesforce integrations

What you will do

Lead and develop the backend engineering team through regular 1:1s, feedback, performance reviews, and mentoring
Coordinate the team’s engineering work, priorities, and delivery
Contribute hands-on to the development and evolution of Java-based backend services
Drive technical and architectural decisions together with the wider engineering organization
Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure microservices
Ensure high engineering standards across development, testing, security, documentation, and code quality
Collaborate closely with distributed engineering teams and technical leadership across Africa and Europe
Support the development of new platform capabilities and continuous improvement of existing services
Promote knowledge sharing and effective engineering practices within the team
