Senior Java Backend Engineer

Join our client’s team and a newly formed R&D team working on an established technology platform that supports health programs across multiple African countries.

About the project

The client is an international nonprofit organization focused on strengthening the health and resilience of girls across Africa. The client operates a technology-enabled ecosystem connecting community organizations, healthcare providers, and other local partners.

The team will contribute to the further development and orchestration of the existing production platform, with the longer-term goal of making the technology more extensible and suitable for use beyond the current programs.

Your impact

As a Senior Java Backend Engineer, you will work closely with the Engineering Team Lead and other engineers to develop and evolve backend services, contribute to technical decisions, and ensure the platform remains scalable, secure, and maintainable.

What makes you a great fit

• 7+ years of professional backend development experience with Java
• Strong hands-on experience with the Spring framework
• Strong understanding of backend and software engineering principles
• Practical experience with AWS
• Experience developing reliable, scalable, and maintainable production software
• Ability to work independently and contribute effectively within a distributed engineering team
• Strong problem-solving and logical thinking skills
• Excellent spoken and written English

Nice to Have

• Hands-on experience with microservices architectures
• Experience working with complex distributed production systems
• Experience contributing to technical design and architecture decisions

What you will do

• Develop and maintain backend services and new platform features using Java and Spring
• Apply solid software engineering principles throughout design, development, testing, and maintenance
• Contribute to the evolution of an existing microservices-based production platform
• Build software with scalability, maintainability, and quality in mind
• Ensure developed solutions follow information security and personal data protection requirements
• Collaborate closely with engineers and other team members in an international environment
• Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, technical discussions, and project activities
• Create clear technical documentation that can be effectively used and maintained by other team members
• Stay current with relevant technologies and software engineering practices
